The Department of Health has confirmed 1,414 new cases of Covid-19 and 79 further deaths.

There have now been a total of 195,303 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 3,292 deaths related to the virus in Ireland.

There are currently 1,492 patients in hospital with the virus, with 211 in ICU. There were 55 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

the HSE’s Chief Clinical Officer has said over 80% of the population will now have to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to achieve herd immunity due to the new variants.

“We are looking at certainly 80% rather than 60% to 70% and perhaps higher than 80%,” he added.

A public information campaign about the roll-out of the community Covid-19 vaccination programme for those aged over 70 will begin this weekend.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly confirmed that the roll-out, starting first with those aged over 85, will begin in February.
