There have been 5 further deaths and 69 more confirmed cases of Covid-19 recorded in the Republic, the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has said.

Four of the newly recorded deaths are from April and June. The death toll remains at 1,768 from a total of 26,372 cases.

Twenty-two of the cases are located in Offaly, 19 in Kildare, eight in Laois, six in Dublin, and 14 are spread across eight other counties (Clare, Cork, Donegal, Galway, Limerick, Louth, Meath and Wexford).

Acting chief medical officer Ronan Glynn gave a specific warning about the rising number of Covid-19 cases in three counties – Kildare, Offaly and Laois.

He said: “Over the past fourteen days, 226 cases have arisen in Kildare, Laois and Offaly. These represent almost half of all cases in Ireland over that time period.

“While the majority of these cases can be accounted for by outbreaks, this volume of cases is significant and our main priority now is to ensure that these outbreaks do not lead to widespread community transmission in the region.
